Experimenting with Form

I began experimenting with the form of the folie starting with a 5 x 5 x 5m cube.

Explorative design process

Experimenting with fragmentation of the form- angular lines to express tension.

Landscape elements are extruded and manipulated to create form

Jaggered and split form expresses ruin and destruction. Wrapping form creates a protective shell similar to that of a bunker.

Folie could be a series of climbing sculptures within the landscape.

Inspiration

My initial idea was to incorporate historical aspects of the site to shape the design.

PORT    - waterway with facilities for loading and unloading ships
           - protection from storms and rough water
           - an opening/cylinder for the passage of steam or fluid
           - a place where data can pass in or out of a central processing unit
           - INTERFACE

--->  place of CONNECTION
-------> place of PROTECTION

An image of a bunker. Historically the Howard Smith Wharves was used as an air raid shelter.

Objects define their interaction with the outside world through the methods they expose. Methods form the objects interface with the outside world.

Site Visit 2nd March

Today I took the walkshop from QUT to the Howard Smith Wharves site. As I could not attend the site visit on Monday I took my own tour of the site and surrounds. Beginning at the University the route passed through William St, straight down the Queen St Mall and finally to the Howard Smith wharves. Below are some images, sketches and notes of my findings.

The new bikeway system provides an important transportation and link between the inner city suburbs such as West End, CBD and New Farm.

A view of Parliament house at the beginning of the walk shop. The building can be seen when looking all the way down William St.

A pathway leading down towards the treasury casino. The historical sculplture provides a focal point along the pathway.

The architecture of the treasury casino is juxtaposed against the modern architecture behind.

The modern architecture behind creates a contrast to the heritage listed treasury casino building in the foreground.

A square is created at the top of the Queen St Mall. This provides a space of rest and interaction.

A performance platform located along the mall. This provides a venue for entertainment and social interaction.

Local artists performing in the Queen St Mall provide small gathering of peoples and social interaction.

A view of the Howard Smith Wharves site from the citycat. Positioned at a prime riverfront location and set against a backdrop of the Story Bridge and cliffs behind.
